Production manager salary in New Zealand (2026)

A production manager in New Zealand typically earns $110,000-$140,000, with senior manufacturing managers on large or continuous sites reaching $170,000. The step up from supervisor is meaningful, which is one reason strong supervisors are worth developing rather than losing. Ranges below are indicative, based on what public NZ salary guides generally report, rounded to $5,000.

LevelIndicative range (base, per year)What that usually looks like
Production supervisor / team leader$80k-$100kShift-based, hands-on, first step into leadership
Production manager$110k-$140kOwns output, quality and the roster for a plant
Senior production / manufacturing manager$140k-$170kLarge or 24/7 site, multiple supervisors reporting in

We benchmark live market data for clients before they go to market, because the published surveys are usually six to twelve months behind where offers are actually landing.

What moves the number

The production manager band is unusually sensitive to the nature of the site:

  • Continuous vs batch. A 24/7 food or dairy plant with tight compliance pays more than a day-shift fabrication shop, because the consequences of a bad week are bigger.
  • Regulated environments. Food safety (RMP, HACCP), hazardous substances or export certification add real value, and candidates who hold that experience know it.
  • Span of control. Three supervisors and sixty staff sits at the top of the band; a single line with a leading hand sits at the bottom.
  • Planning capability. Production managers who can own scheduling and materials, not just the floor, are increasingly asked to, and paid for it.

The operations manager band sits one step above; if your production manager is already doing that job in all but title, the market will eventually price it for you.

Waikato vs Auckland

This is one of the roles where the Waikato holds its own. Hamilton and the surrounding towns have a dense cluster of food, dairy and agri-manufacturing sites, and experienced production managers with a regulated-environment background are in genuine demand locally. In our experience an Auckland premium of a few percent exists for general manufacturing, but for food and dairy it is often nil. Candidates weigh a shorter commute and a house they can afford quite heavily, and a $125k Waikato role regularly wins against a $135k Auckland one.

Hiring market for production managers

Demand is high for supervisors, production managers and plant leaders, and the same small pool of skilled people is being chased by SMEs and larger employers at once. Construction and logistics draw on the same leadership skill set, which pushes expectations up further.

What we notice: production managers rarely move for money alone. They move for a site that is better run, a manager who backs them, and a clear line to operations or plant management. If your offer is a lateral move at a similar number, expect it to be declined. If it comes with a bigger site or a real development plan, the number matters less than employers assume. Recruiting well for this role usually takes 6-10 weeks through our permanent recruitment process.

Benchmark your team

Supervisors who have quietly grown into production managers are the most common under-paid people we find in a review cycle, and the most expensive to replace when they leave. If it has been more than a year since you checked your production leadership bands against the live market, our Salary & Performance Reviews service will benchmark them, facilitate the conversations and handle the variation letters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average production manager salary in NZ?

Indicatively, a production manager in New Zealand earns $110,000-$140,000 in 2026. Production supervisors and team leaders sit at $80,000-$100,000, and senior production or manufacturing managers running large, continuous sites reach $140,000-$170,000. Food, dairy and other regulated environments tend to pay toward the top of each band.

What is the difference between a production manager and a plant manager salary?

A plant manager owns the whole site, including maintenance, quality, safety and the P&L, and is usually paid $20,000-$40,000 more than the production manager on the same site. The production manager owns output and people on the floor. Many plant managers were production managers first.

Do production managers get paid extra for shift work?

Not usually as a separate allowance at manager level; the shift pattern is priced into the base instead. A production manager responsible for a 24/7 site should expect a higher base than one on a day-shift operation, and to be on call.
