NZ Salary Guide 2026

NZ Salary Guide 2026: operations, engineering, supply chain, finance & sales

Indicative New Zealand salary ranges for 26 specialist and leadership roles, by level, with a Waikato vs Auckland note on each. Written for SME owners setting a band, and for the people deciding whether to move.

Why we publish this

Almost every hiring conversation we have starts with the same question: what should we be paying? Over 20+ years in recruitment and 1,850+ roles filled, RecruitNet was founded in 2020 by Brigitta, who has watched SME salary bands drift behind the market, and seen good candidates decline before the interview because the number was a year out of date. This guide is our attempt to close that gap in public, for the roles we recruit most.

The ranges are indicative. They reflect what public New Zealand salary guides typically publish for 2026, rounded to $5,000, stated as base salary, and organised by the level that actually drives pay: scope, not years. They are not a quote and they are not a promise. For clients we benchmark live market data from recent placements and candidate conversations, which is where the real number lives, through our Salary & Performance Reviews service.

How to use it

  • Employers: find the role, match the level to the real scope of the job (not the title), and use the range as the market’s view before you advertise. If your budget sits below it, read the “what moves the number” section; reshaping the role is often the answer.
  • Candidates: use the level descriptions to place yourself honestly, then read the Waikato vs Auckland note before you assume a move north pays. Current roles are on our job search page.
  • Both: every page ends with three questions we are asked most about that role. If yours is not there, ask us.

How we benchmark

Published surveys are a rear-view mirror: by the time a guide is printed, the offers that shaped it are six to twelve months old. When we benchmark for a client we start with a diagnostic role briefing, then draw on what candidates in that role are actually accepting and declining right now, across active and passive conversations, in the Waikato and nationally.

The output is a range you can defend, a view on where your current people sit against it, and, if you want it, someone independent in the room for the review conversations. Not every gap is closed by paying more; reframing the package or redesigning the role is often the smarter answer, and we will say so.

Salary guide FAQs

Where do the salary ranges in this guide come from?

They are indicative 2026 ranges drawn from what public New Zealand salary guides typically publish, rounded to the nearest $5,000 and stated as base salary. They are a starting point. For clients we benchmark live market data from recent placements and candidate conversations, which is where the current number actually sits.

Why do the Waikato and Auckland pay differently for the same role?

Auckland's larger corporate market typically pays 5-10% more for like-for-like roles, but the gap closes or reverses in the Waikato's strongest sectors: dairy, food processing, agri and manufacturing. Once housing and commute are counted, candidates often see a Waikato role as better value, and each role page explains where the balance sits.

How should I use this guide to set a salary band?

Find the role, pick the level that matches the actual scope rather than the title, and treat the range as the market's view before you go to market. If your budget sits below it, the answer is not always paying more: reframing the package or reshaping the role often works. When the number matters, ask us for a live benchmark.
