Accountant salary in New Zealand (2026)

An accountant in New Zealand typically earns $75,000-$95,000 at intermediate level and $95,000-$120,000 as a senior. Graduate and assistant accountants start at $55,000-$70,000. These are indicative ranges based on what public NZ salary guides generally publish, rounded to $5,000 and stated as base salary. Chartered accountants sit on a separate, higher scale; see our chartered accountant salary page.

LevelIndicative range (base, per year)What that usually looks like
Graduate / assistant accountant$55k-$70k0-2 years, reconciliations, AP/AR, month-end support
Intermediate accountant$75k-$95k3-5 years, owns month-end, often studying toward CA
Senior accountant$95k-$120kRuns the ledger, reporting and audit; may supervise

Practice and industry pay differently at each level. We benchmark live market data for clients against the path their role actually sits on.

What moves the number

Accountant pay in New Zealand is shaped by path, progress toward CA, and ownership:

  • Practice vs industry. Chartered accounting firms pay less at graduate level but provide the CA pathway; industry pays more at intermediate level for people who already own month-end.
  • Progress toward CA. An accountant part-way through the CA programme is paid above one who is not studying, and the step on qualification is the biggest single jump in the discipline.
  • Month-end ownership. Running the close, reconciliations and reporting independently is what separates intermediate from senior, more than years.
  • Systems. Hands-on experience in a mid-market ERP, or leading a system migration, lifts the band because SMEs need it and rarely have it.

Accountants who can explain the numbers to non-finance managers are moving toward management accounting and are paid accordingly.

Waikato vs Auckland

Auckland typically pays 5-10% more at the same level, with the widest gap at senior level in corporate and large-firm roles. Hamilton has a strong base of chartered accounting practices and a large SME sector that needs industry accountants, and competition for intermediate accountants locally is real. Graduates often start in a Hamilton practice, qualify, and then face the choice between Auckland corporate pay and Waikato lifestyle; a fair number choose to stay if the local role offers progression. See our Hamilton recruitment page for the local employer picture.

Hiring market for accountants

Accountants are easier to find than engineers, but good intermediate accountants who can own month-end are in short supply in the regions, and the best ones are approached by practices and industry alike. Candidates move for CA support, a clear step to senior or management accounting, flexibility, and a manager who will teach them the commercial side.

Employers get this band wrong by advertising an intermediate role at graduate money, or by expecting a senior accountant to also be the management accountant and the systems lead for one salary. Both produce slow searches and short tenures. Our accounting and finance practice recruits from assistant accountant through to CFO for SMEs across the Waikato and beyond; typical time to hire is 4-8 weeks. Accountants looking for a move can submit a CV for a confidential conversation.

Benchmark your team

Accountants know exactly what they are paid relative to the market, because they read the payroll. If your intermediate accountant has just passed a CA module and has not been reviewed, the gap is already there. Our Salary & Performance Reviews service benchmarks the finance team against live data and facilitates the conversations.
