Finance manager salary in New Zealand (2026)
A finance manager in New Zealand typically earns $115,000-$140,000, with senior finance managers at $140,000-$170,000 and heads of finance from $170,000 up. The upper band overlaps with financial controller pay, and in many SMEs the head of finance is the CFO in all but name. These are indicative ranges based on what public NZ salary guides generally publish, rounded to $5,000 and stated as base.
| Level | Indicative range (base, per year) | What that usually looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Finance manager | $115k-$140k | Leads a small team, reporting and compliance |
| Senior finance manager | $140k-$170k | Broader scope, commercial input, systems projects |
| Head of finance | $170k-$210k+ | Executive team, strategy, often the CFO in an SME |
Because the title covers such a wide range of jobs, we benchmark live market data for clients on what the finance manager actually owns.
What moves the number
Finance manager pay is set by scope, and the scope varies more than in any other finance role:
- Who they report to. A finance manager reporting to a CFO or controller is a narrower role than one reporting directly to the GM or owner, and is paid accordingly.
- Team. Leading accountants, payroll and AP/AR is a real management job; a finance manager with no reports is usually a senior accountant with a better title.
- Commercial contribution. Forecasting, pricing support, capex and contract input move the role into the senior band.
- Projects. Systems migrations, restructures and acquisitions are the projects that justify the top of the band, and the experience candidates carry into their next role.
CA qualification is usual at this level and expected for head of finance; management accounting experience is a strong complement.
Waikato vs Auckland
Auckland pays 5-10% more for finance managers in comparable businesses, with the largest gap in corporate roles that sit beneath a CFO. In the Waikato the finance manager is frequently the most senior finance person in an SME, which means more scope and often more pay than the title would attract in Auckland. Candidates who want the whole picture rather than a slice of it tend to find that appealing, and it is a genuine advantage Waikato employers can lead with. Our accounting and finance practice places finance managers across the region and further afield.
Hiring market for finance managers
Finance managers are in steady demand and the people you want are running a finance team now. They move for a broader role, a path to controller or CFO, a business that is growing or changing, and a leadership team that wants finance in the room. They leave businesses where the role is narrower than promised.
The employer mistake is the title itself: advertising "finance manager" without deciding whether the job is a senior accountant with reports, a controller, or a head of finance, and setting the band by guesswork. A diagnostic role briefing before advertising, which is how we start every search, resolves most of that. Typical time to hire is 6-10 weeks. If you are unsure which finance role you actually need, our recruitment strategy and design service exists for exactly that question.
Benchmark your team
Finance managers whose scope has grown with the business are commonly still paid for the role they were hired into, not the one they are doing. A review that re-scopes the role first and then benchmarks it against live data fixes that properly. Our Salary & Performance Reviews service does both and facilitates the conversation.
