Financial controller salary in New Zealand (2026)
A financial controller in a New Zealand SME typically earns $130,000-$160,000, with senior controllers in larger, multi-entity businesses at $160,000-$200,000 and group financial controllers from $200,000 up. A short-term incentive of 10-20% is common from the senior band onward. These ranges are indicative, reflecting what public NZ salary guides generally report, rounded to $5,000 and stated as base.
| Level | Indicative range (base, per year) | What that usually looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Financial controller (SME) | $130k-$160k | Owns the finance function, small team, CA usual |
| Senior financial controller | $160k-$200k | Larger business, multiple entities, systems |
| Group financial controller | $200k-$240k+ | Group consolidation, board reporting, STI common |
The overlap between financial controller, finance manager and CFO titles in SMEs is considerable. We benchmark live market data for clients on the accountabilities, not the title on the door.
What moves the number
Financial controller pay follows complexity and how far the role reaches into the business:
- Entities and consolidation. A single company is the bottom of the band; a group with several trading entities, intercompany and consolidation is the top.
- Systems ownership. Controllers who have led an ERP selection or migration are paid for it, because most SMEs will need one and few controllers have done it.
- Banking, funding and board. Managing the bank relationship, covenants and board reporting moves the role toward CFO territory.
- Commercial reach. Pricing, contract review, capex appraisal and a seat on the leadership team lift the number above a compliance-only controller.
CA qualification is expected at this level in most businesses; the exceptions are usually long-tenured controllers who grew up with the company.
Waikato vs Auckland
Auckland pays around 10% more for financial controllers in comparable businesses, and the group and corporate roles that sit above $200,000 are mostly there. The Waikato's SMEs, by contrast, tend to give their controller a broader role, often the de facto CFO, with direct access to the owner and a genuine say in the business, and pay competitively to keep them. Many controllers who have done the Auckland corporate version tell us the Waikato SME version is the better job. Our Hamilton recruitment page covers the local employers.
Hiring market for financial controllers
Financial controllers move rarely and carefully, and nearly all our placements at this level come through confidential search rather than advertising. Candidates move for a step toward CFO, a business with a growth or transaction story, an owner who wants a finance partner rather than a bookkeeper, and a package that recognises the breadth of the role. They avoid businesses where the controller is expected to also be the payroll clerk and the IT department.
Employers get the band wrong when they promote a senior accountant, call them controller, and leave the salary where it was; or when they hire a controller for an SME at finance-manager money because the team is small. Our accounting and finance practice and executive recruitment service handle controller and CFO searches; typical time to hire is 8-12 weeks.
Benchmark your team
Reviewing the financial controller's package is the review the owner usually does alone, and it is the one most likely to drift, because the controller is not going to put their own increase in the budget. An independent benchmark against live data makes it a normal conversation. Our Salary & Performance Reviews service provides the benchmark and facilitates the discussion.
