NZ Salary Guide 2026

Marketing manager salary in NZ (2026)

Marketing manager is the role most SMEs hire once, late, and expect to cover everything from brand to lead generation. The salary band needs to reflect how much of that is realistic. Here is the 2026 New Zealand market.

Marketing manager salary in New Zealand (2026)

A marketing manager in New Zealand typically earns $105,000-$135,000, with heads of marketing at $140,000-$180,000. Marketing coordinators and executives sit at $65,000-$80,000. These are indicative ranges based on what public NZ salary guides generally publish, rounded to $5,000 and stated as base salary.

LevelIndicative range (base, per year)What that usually looks like
Marketing coordinator / executive$65k-$80kRuns campaigns, content and channels day to day
Marketing manager$105k-$135kOwns strategy, budget and a small team or agencies
Head of marketing$140k-$180kExecutive team, brand, digital and demand generation

The B2B and industrial version of this role, which is most of what we recruit, is priced differently from consumer brand marketing. We benchmark live market data for clients within the right segment.

What moves the number

Marketing manager pay follows how directly the work connects to revenue:

  • Demand generation. Marketing managers who can show a lead pipeline they built, with numbers, are paid at the top of the band. Brand-only experience is valued but harder to price.
  • Digital depth. Hands-on capability in paid search, SEO, marketing automation and analytics is expected at manager level in SMEs, and candidates who genuinely have it rather than having managed an agency that did are paid more.
  • B2B and technical sectors. Marketing industrial equipment, engineering services or agri products to professional buyers is a specialist skill and commands a premium in the Waikato.
  • Budget and team. Owning a real budget and a coordinator or two is what separates the manager band from a senior executive with a manager's title.

Waikato vs Auckland

Auckland pays around 10% more and has far more marketing roles at every level, especially in consumer brands, agencies and corporates. The Waikato market is smaller and skews B2B: manufacturers, agri businesses, engineering firms and professional services that need a marketing manager who can generate leads for a sales team rather than run a brand campaign. Those employers pay well for that skill because it is scarce locally, and the role is often broader and more senior than an Auckland equivalent at the same number. See where we recruit in the Waikato.

Hiring market for marketing managers

Marketing recruitment is an established RecruitNet specialism, and the market has two very different pools: a large one of generalist marketers, and a small one of people who have delivered measurable B2B lead generation in a technical sector. The second is who our clients want, and they are nearly all employed. Candidates move for a business that will let them own the strategy, a budget that matches the expectation, and a sales team that will follow up the leads.

Employers get this band wrong by hiring a coordinator into a manager's role because the budget was set at coordinator level, then expecting strategy, or by expecting one marketing manager to be the designer, the web developer, the copywriter and the events team. Scoping the role honestly before advertising, which our recruitment strategy and design service does, produces a better hire at the same money. Our sales and marketing practice handles the search; typical time to hire is 6-8 weeks.

Benchmark your team

Marketing managers who joined an SME as its first marketer and built the function from nothing are frequently still paid the starting salary three years on. A review that re-scopes the role and benchmarks it against live data, before an Auckland agency or corporate does, is the cheaper option. Our Salary & Performance Reviews service provides the benchmark and facilitates the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average marketing manager salary in NZ?

Indicatively, a marketing manager in New Zealand earns $105,000-$135,000 in 2026. Marketing coordinators and executives earn $65,000-$80,000, and heads of marketing $140,000-$180,000. B2B marketing managers with demonstrable lead-generation results sit toward the top of the band, in the Waikato as much as in Auckland.

Do B2B marketing managers earn more than consumer marketers?

At manager level in the regions, often yes, because B2B and technical marketing skills are scarcer and tie directly to sales pipeline. In Auckland, consumer brand roles in large companies can pay more at head-of level. The skill that commands the premium in either market is measurable demand generation.

Should an SME hire a marketing manager or use an agency?

Most SMEs benefit from a marketing manager once they have a sales team to feed and a budget above the manager's salary to deploy; below that, a strong coordinator plus an agency or freelancers is usually more cost-effective. The mistake is hiring a manager and giving them no budget, or hiring a coordinator and expecting strategy.
