Sales manager salary in New Zealand (2026)
A sales manager in New Zealand typically earns a base of $100,000-$130,000 at territory or regional level and $130,000-$170,000 as a national sales manager, with heads of sales from $170,000. On-target earnings are usually 20-40% above base, and the best performers exceed them. These are indicative ranges based on what public NZ salary guides generally publish, rounded to $5,000.
| Level | Indicative range (base, per year) | What that usually looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Territory / regional sales manager | $100k-$130k | Base; OTE typically 20-40% higher |
| National sales manager | $130k-$170k | Base; leads a team, owns the sales plan |
| Head of sales / sales director | $170k-$220k+ | Base; executive team, STI 20-40% common |
Base-only comparisons mislead in sales more than anywhere else. We benchmark live market data for clients on base, OTE and the structure of the plan, which is where offers are won or lost.
What moves the number
Sales manager pay is shaped by what is being sold and how the plan pays:
- Deal size and cycle. Capital equipment, industrial and B2B solutions with long cycles pay higher bases and lower variable; transactional and distribution sales pay lower bases and higher commission.
- Team vs individual. A sales manager who carries a personal target as well as the team's is paid differently from one who only leads, and candidates will ask which it is.
- Territory quality. An established territory with warm accounts is worth a lower base than a greenfield one, and the plan should reflect it.
- Technical credibility. In engineering, manufacturing and agri sales, a manager who understands the product technically is paid a premium, because the customers do too.
Waikato vs Auckland
Auckland bases run 5-10% higher for comparable sales manager roles, and national roles are more often headquartered there. The Waikato competes on the quality of the territory: agri, dairy services, industrial equipment and building products all have deep customer bases in the region, and a sales manager with the right relationships can out-earn an Auckland counterpart on OTE. Candidates in this discipline weigh the plan and the territory more than the base, which gives Waikato employers room to compete. Our Waikato recruitment page covers the local sector mix.
Hiring market for sales managers
Sales management recruitment is one of RecruitNet's established specialisms, and the market is active: the people who can build and lead a sales team are approached constantly and move on the strength of the opportunity rather than the base. They move for a product they believe in, a plan that pays fairly and transparently, and a GM who understands that sales takes a quarter or two to turn.
Employers get this band wrong by leading with a low base and a generous but vague variable, which experienced sales managers discount to zero, or by copying a competitor's OTE without copying the territory that makes it achievable. A clear plan, written down before advertising, is the single biggest improvement most SMEs can make. Our sales and marketing practice recruits sales managers, BDMs and heads of sales; typical time to hire is 6-8 weeks.
Benchmark your team
Sales teams are reviewed on results, and the base and plan are often left alone for years while the market moves. A review that benchmarks base, OTE and plan structure against live data, rather than last year's results alone, keeps the sales manager who built the pipeline. Our Salary & Performance Reviews service provides that benchmark and facilitates the conversation.
