NZ Salary Guide 2026

Business development manager salary in NZ (2026)

Business development manager is the most inconsistently paid title in this guide, because it covers everything from a phone-based lead generator to the person who lands the accounts a business is built on. Here is how to read the 2026 market.

Business development manager salary in New Zealand (2026)

A business development manager in New Zealand typically earns a base of $95,000-$130,000, with senior BDMs and key account managers at $130,000-$160,000 base and on-target earnings often above $180,000. Junior BDMs start at $75,000-$95,000 base. These are indicative ranges reflecting what public NZ salary guides generally report, rounded to $5,000.

LevelIndicative range (base, per year)What that usually looks like
Junior BDM / account executive$75k-$95kBase; commission on top, learning the market
Business development manager$95k-$130kBase; owns a pipeline, OTE 20-40% above base
Senior BDM / key account manager$130k-$160kBase; strategic accounts, OTE often $180k+

BDM titles are stretched further than any other in this guide, so we benchmark live market data for clients on the actual scope: new business vs account growth, deal size, and how the variable is structured.

What moves the number

BDM pay is driven by what the role is expected to win:

  • New logo vs account growth. Pure hunting roles carry lower bases and higher variable; account-growth roles the reverse. Candidates price the risk accordingly.
  • Deal size and complexity. Winning $2m industrial contracts is a different job from selling $5k service agreements, and the base reflects it.
  • Sector knowledge. BDMs with existing relationships in agri, construction supply, manufacturing or engineering services are paid for the pipeline they bring.
  • Tender and proposal capability. In B2B and government-facing sales, the ability to run a formal tender end to end lifts a BDM into the senior band.

A BDM who has consistently hit target somewhere comparable, and can show it, is the profile employers pay the most for; everything else is a proxy.

Waikato vs Auckland

Auckland bases are 5-10% higher and the very large enterprise BDM roles are mostly there. The Waikato's advantage is territory: agri and dairy services, industrial and construction supply, and engineering services all have concentrated regional customer bases where a well-connected BDM can build a strong OTE without an Auckland commute. Many BDMs who cover the central North Island from Hamilton earn more in total than they would in an Auckland office, and their customers prefer it. Our Hamilton recruitment page covers the local employers.

Hiring market for business development managers

Good BDMs are always employed and usually being approached, and the ones with a track record in your sector are the scarcest. They move for a product or service that is easier to sell than the one they have, a plan that pays on what they control, a manager who supports rather than micromanages, and a business that will actually deliver what they sell. They leave when the operations side lets them down with customers.

Employers mis-set this band by advertising a senior BDM role at junior base with a large but uncapped variable and no existing pipeline, which experienced candidates read as a risk transfer and decline. The fix is honest: a fair base, a realistic ramp, and a territory plan. Our sales and marketing practice recruits BDMs and account managers across industrial, agri and B2B services; typical time to hire is 6-8 weeks. Candidates can see current sales roles on our job search page.

Benchmark your team

BDMs are reviewed on numbers, and the base and plan drift unnoticed while the target goes up each year. A review that benchmarks base, OTE and the plan itself against live data, and asks whether the target is still achievable in the territory, keeps the BDM who knows your customers. Our Salary & Performance Reviews service provides that benchmark and facilitates the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average business development manager salary in NZ?

Indicatively, a business development manager in New Zealand earns a base of $95,000-$130,000 in 2026, with on-target earnings 20-40% higher. Junior BDMs and account executives start at $75,000-$95,000 base, and senior BDMs or key account managers earn $130,000-$160,000 base with OTE often above $180,000.

What is the difference between a BDM and an account manager?

A BDM wins new customers; an account manager grows and retains existing ones. Many SME roles combine both. Pure new-business BDMs typically carry a lower base and higher variable because the risk is higher; account managers the reverse. Key account managers handling strategic customers are paid at the senior end of either scale.

What is a realistic OTE for a BDM in NZ?

For a mid-level BDM, on-target earnings of $120,000-$170,000 are typical in 2026, made up of a base around $95,000-$130,000 plus variable. Senior BDMs and key account managers commonly exceed $180,000 OTE. A plan is only realistic if the target can be hit in the territory as it stands; candidates will check.
