Who we recruit for across the Waikato
Drive an hour in any direction from Hamilton and you pass through a different kind of economy every twenty minutes. That variety is what makes Waikato recruitment interesting, and it is why a one-size-fits-all approach does not work here. Some of the towns we recruit in most:
Cambridge and Te Awamutu
South of the city, Cambridge and Te Awamutu have grown into a belt of engineering workshops, equine and agri businesses and light manufacturing. Many of the people we place here live in Hamilton and are happy to commute against the traffic.
Morrinsville, Matamata and the Hauraki Plains
This is dairy country, and the roles follow the milk: processing plant leaders, maintenance engineers, quality and compliance managers and the supply chain people who move product to port. We also see steady demand for finance and administration roles in the co-operatives and rural suppliers based in these towns.
Tokoroa, Putāruru and the South Waikato
Timber and wood processing dominate the South Waikato, and it is a sector we know well. Kiwi Lumber, Clelands Timber and PermaPine are all clients, and between them they have taught us what a good mill manager, a good saw doctor’s supervisor and a good timber sales lead really look like.
Huntly and the north
Huntly, Ngāruawāhia and Te Kauwhata are increasingly part of the Hamilton-Auckland corridor. Energy, transport and manufacturing employers here often draw candidates from both cities, which is where our Auckland reach comes in useful.
Taupō, Ōtorohanga, Te Kūiti and Thames
Further out, the roles get more senior and the candidate pools get smaller. Geothermal and forestry around Taupō, farming services and engineering in Ōtorohanga and Te Kūiti, and marine and mining engineering on the Coromandel side of Thames all need leaders who are genuinely hard to find locally. Those are the searches where a recruiter with a national network earns their keep.
Roles we fill in the Waikato
Regional Waikato businesses tend to hire for the same handful of critical positions, and we have filled most of them many times over:
- Site, plant and mill managers
- Production and operations managers
- Maintenance, mechanical and electrical engineers
- Quality, compliance and H&S managers, particularly in food and timber
- Supply chain planners, procurement leads and logistics managers
- Financial controllers and finance managers for owner-operated businesses
- Territory and business development managers selling into the rural sector
You can see what is open right now on our job search page. If your role sits in a specialisation we do not cover, we will say so and point you to someone who does.
How we work with Waikato employers
Every Waikato search starts with a site visit. That is not a marketing line; it is because regional roles come with context that never makes it into the job description. The relief manager who has been holding the fort. The shift pattern nobody wants to change. The town’s one decent café. All of it affects who will take the job and stay in it.
From there the process is the same one we run for every permanent, contract or executive appointment: a proper brief, a targeted search that goes well beyond job boards, thorough screening, a shortlist with our honest read on each person, and a follow-up once they have started.
What changes for the regions is the candidate strategy. We look first at people already living in or near the town, then at Hamilton commuters, then at people elsewhere in New Zealand who have a reason to move, whether that is family, lifestyle or a farm they have always wanted. Being clear about the order saves everyone months.
For candidates in the Waikato
If you are based in a Waikato town and looking for a senior or specialist role, the honest news is that most of the good ones are not advertised in the usual places. Regional employers often ask us to search quietly, especially when the role is a replacement for someone who has not yet left.
The best thing you can do is submit your CV so we know you exist and what you want. We will not spam you; we will call when something genuinely fits. If you are currently employed and want to keep the conversation discreet, book a confidential conversation instead.
Thinking of relocating to the Waikato?
We help people move here from Auckland, Wellington and overseas every year. The trade-off is usually the same: a slightly smaller employer, a much shorter commute, more house for the money and a real chance to run something. If you want to know what a mill, a food plant or a rural engineering business is like to work in day to day, ask us. We have visited most of them.
Why RecruitNet for Waikato recruitment
We are a Hamilton-based, Waikato-owned recruitment agency, and the region is where we have spent more than twenty years building relationships. Brigitta has filled more than 1,850 roles over that time, and the timber, dairy, engineering and food businesses of the wider Waikato make up a large share of them.
We are also not limited to the region. When a Waikato employer needs a skill set that lives in Auckland, Christchurch or overseas, we run the wider search from the same desk, and when a national business needs someone for its Waikato site, we are the local partner who can actually meet the candidate for a coffee.
Brigitta Warren leads every search personally. If you would like to talk about a role anywhere between Huntly and Taupō, get in touch and we will come and see you.
