Where we recruit

Recruitment agency New Plymouth: engineering and industrial recruiters for Taranaki

Taranaki has more heavy engineering per head than almost anywhere in New Zealand, and a candidate market that everyone from the energy sector to the dairy factories draws on at once. We recruit senior engineering, operations, technical and finance people for New Plymouth employers from our Hamilton base.

Who we recruit for in New Plymouth

New Plymouth is a long way from most recruiters, and that has shaped a job market where employers either grow their own people or hire from outside the region. We do a lot of the second kind of search.

Energy and process engineering

Onshore and offshore oil and gas, gas processing, power generation and the growing hydrogen and renewables work built on top of that skill base. These businesses need process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and project engineers who understand hazardous environments and regulated industries. Taranaki produces excellent people in these disciplines, and they are also in demand from geothermal employers in Rotorua and Taupō, which cuts both ways.

Heavy engineering and manufacturing

Around Bell Block and the port sit fabricators, machine shops, engineering contractors and specialist manufacturers. Howard Wright, the New Plymouth hospital-bed manufacturer, engaged us for the first time in recent years. CEO Bruce Moller said afterwards: “We were impressed with all the candidates Brigitta shortlisted for our role and she was of great help with our final selection process.”

Dairy and food processing

Taranaki’s dairy industry supports one of the largest processing operations in the world and a network of suppliers, transport operators and engineering contractors around it. We recruit the production, maintenance, quality and supply chain leaders that this ecosystem needs, without pretending to be the in-house recruiter for any particular processor.

Timber

Taranaki Pine is a client, and timber processing is a sector we know across the whole North Island, from the King Country to the Bay of Plenty. Mill and site leadership roles here are a natural fit for us.

Roles we fill in Taranaki

  • Engineering managers and project engineers
  • Process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and maintenance engineers (see engineering recruitment)
  • Production managers, plant managers and operations managers
  • Quality, technical and H&S managers
  • Supply chain, procurement and logistics leads
  • Financial controllers and finance managers
  • Business development managers with an industrial or energy customer base

We recruit at the senior and intermediate specialist level. Current Taranaki roles appear on our job search page.

How we work with New Plymouth employers

New Plymouth is about three hours from Hamilton, so we plan the in-person parts of a search carefully and do them properly. The brief happens on site: we visit, walk the plant or workshop, meet the hiring manager and the team, and leave with a clear picture of what the role has to fix. Where clients want us in the room for final interviews, we come back. Everything between those two points runs by phone and video.

That model suits Taranaki roles well, because the search itself is rarely local. For engineering and technical leadership positions, the successful candidate is often coming from Auckland, the Waikato, Wellington or the South Island, and our job is to find people who are both capable and genuinely willing to move. We have a national network of more than 10,000 connections to draw on, and we are candid from the first conversation about which candidates are realistic.

We also understand that many Taranaki roles carry regulatory weight: hazardous areas, food safety, environmental compliance. Our technical and quality specialisation exists precisely for those appointments.

The process is the same one behind every permanent or executive search we run, and it does not end at the offer letter. We follow up after the start date, which for a relocated candidate matters more than usual.

For candidates in New Plymouth

Taranaki engineers and technical people are in demand well beyond the region, and if you are thinking about your next step, whether in New Plymouth or elsewhere in New Zealand, we would like to talk. Submit your CV, browse current roles or book a confidential conversation if discretion matters.

If you are considering a move to Taranaki, it is one of the more rewarding relocations in the country: serious engineering work, a coastline and a mountain in the same view, and housing that still makes sense. We help candidates weigh it up honestly, including the trade-offs, and we stay in touch after you start.

Why RecruitNet for Taranaki recruitment

We are a specialist recruitment agency, founded in Hamilton in 2020 and led by Brigitta Warren, who has recruited engineering and industrial roles for more than twenty years. Over that career she has filled more than 1,850 roles across New Zealand, and Taranaki employers such as Howard Wright and Taranaki Pine are part of that record.

New Plymouth businesses tend to work with us because we recruit the same disciplines they hire for, because we bring a national candidate pool to a regional market, and because we turn up. If you have a role in New Plymouth, Bell Block, Stratford or Hāwera, brief us and we will plan the visit.

Frequently asked questions

What are your fees for recruiting in New Plymouth?

We quote each role individually and agree the fee in writing before the search begins. It reflects the seniority of the role and the type of appointment. Travel to Taranaki for the brief and interviews is part of how we work, not an extra line on the invoice.

How long does it take to fill an engineering role in Taranaki?

Allow eight to twelve weeks for engineering and technical leadership roles, and six to ten weeks for operations, supply chain and finance positions. When the successful candidate is relocating to Taranaki, notice periods and the move itself can add a few weeks after acceptance.

Will you recruit our New Plymouth role remotely?

The brief and, where wanted, the final interviews happen in person. The search, screening, reference checks and shortlist reviews run by phone and video. It is the same model we use for every client outside the Waikato and it works well for Taranaki.

Can you find engineers willing to relocate to New Plymouth?

Yes. Most senior Taranaki appointments involve someone moving from another region, and our national network is built for that. We raise relocation in the first conversation with every candidate so only genuinely willing people reach your shortlist.
