Where we recruit

Recruitment agency Rotorua and Taupō: forestry, geothermal and local government

Rotorua and Taupō share a forest, a geothermal field and a talent problem: the senior people that timber, energy, tourism and council employers need are in short supply locally. We recruit them from Hamilton, an hour up the road, with a network that runs nationwide.

Who we recruit for in Rotorua and Taupō

The central North Island runs on three things: trees, heat and visitors. Each of them needs leaders, engineers and specialists who are surprisingly hard to find within the region itself.

Forestry and wood processing

The Kaingaroa and surrounding forests make Rotorua the wood-processing capital of New Zealand: sawmills, timber treatment, panel and pulp operations, log transport and the engineering firms that keep the plants running. PermaPine at Reporoa, between Rotorua and Taupō, is a client, as is forestry management firm Forest 360, and we recruit for timber businesses across the wider region including Kiwi Lumber and Clelands Timber. Mill managers, maintenance engineers, production leaders and timber sales people are roles we know well.

Geothermal and energy

The Taupō Volcanic Zone hosts most of New Zealand’s geothermal generation, plus the drilling, steamfield and process engineering that goes with it. These roles are technically demanding, and candidates often come from oil and gas, power or heavy industry elsewhere in the country. That is where our reach into Taranaki and beyond becomes useful.

Local government and public organisations

Councils and public bodies need the same operational, technical and health and safety leadership that industry does. Iain Mac, who we placed as H&S Manager at Rotorua Lakes Council, described the experience simply: “Of all the recruitment companies I have dealt with recently, RecruitNet was the best by far.”

Tourism-adjacent operations

We do not recruit front-of-house tourism roles. We do recruit the operations managers, maintenance leads, finance managers and commercial people who sit behind the attractions, hotels and transport operators that make Rotorua and Taupō work.

Roles we fill in Rotorua and Taupō

  • Mill managers, site managers and production managers
  • Maintenance, mechanical, electrical and process engineers
  • Health and safety managers and advisors (see technical and quality recruitment)
  • Quality and compliance managers, particularly in timber treatment and food
  • Logistics and supply chain leads for log transport and export
  • Financial controllers and finance managers
  • Territory and business development managers selling into forestry and rural markets

Open roles in the region are listed on our job search page.

How we work with Rotorua and Taupō employers

Rotorua is an hour from our Hamilton office and Taupō is under two, so for us these are drive-there-and-back-for-lunch locations. We brief on site, and for forestry and processing roles we make a point of walking the plant, because a mill is a hard thing to describe to a candidate you have not seen it yourself.

The search then follows the same path as every RecruitNet appointment: a proper brief, a targeted search across our network, thorough screening and interviews, a shortlist with our honest assessment of each person, offer management and a post-placement follow-up. For public-sector clients we are comfortable with panel interviews, formal scoring and the extra documentation that comes with them.

The part that is specific to this region is candidate strategy. We look first at people already in the central North Island, then at commuters and returners, then nationally. For senior engineering and forestry roles the third group is often where the appointment comes from, and we are clear about that from day one so you are not waiting on a local pool that does not exist.

For candidates in Rotorua and Taupō

If you work in forestry, wood processing, geothermal, engineering, council or the operations side of tourism, and you are ready for a bigger role, we want to know you. Many of the senior positions in the region are recruited quietly, so submitting your CV now is the surest way to be on the list when the right one comes up. You can also browse current roles.

For people elsewhere in New Zealand thinking about a move to the lakes: it is a genuine lifestyle shift, and the roles here often come with more responsibility than an equivalent title in a bigger city. We help candidates relocate to Rotorua and Taupō from Auckland, the Waikato and the South Island, and we are happy to talk through housing, schools and what the work is really like before you decide.

Why RecruitNet for Rotorua recruitment

RecruitNet is a specialist recruitment agency founded in Hamilton in 2020 by Brigitta Warren, who has spent more than twenty years recruiting technical and industrial roles. Over that career she has filled more than 1,850 roles across New Zealand, and timber, wood processing and public-sector appointments in the central North Island are a consistent part of that work.

What Rotorua and Taupō employers get is a recruiter who knows the sectors, has already placed people in the region and can reach candidates the local market cannot. If your role is in Rotorua, Taupō, Kawerau, Reporoa or anywhere in between, brief us and we will come and see you.

Frequently asked questions

What do you charge for a Rotorua or Taupō placement?

We quote per role and agree the fee before we begin. It depends on seniority, the type of appointment and how hard the search is expected to be. We do not add travel costs for Rotorua or Taupō roles; they are within our normal working range from Hamilton.

How long does recruitment take in the central North Island?

Six to ten weeks is typical for operations, supply chain and finance roles. Specialist engineering, forestry and geothermal positions can run eight to twelve weeks, particularly when the successful candidate is relocating from elsewhere in New Zealand.

Do you recruit for councils and public organisations?

Yes. We placed the H&S Manager at Rotorua Lakes Council and are familiar with the panel interviews, scoring frameworks and documentation that public-sector appointments require. Our specialisations, particularly technical and quality, operations and finance, transfer directly.

Can you find people willing to move to Rotorua or Taupō?

Yes. The region is an easy sell for the right person, and our network runs New Zealand-wide. We raise location and lifestyle early, and we only put forward candidates who are genuinely prepared to make the move.
